Nancy Schatz Alton is a freelance writer and editor. For almost two decades, she’s written for many types of publications, websites and clients. Find her current work at http://www.parentmap.com and on her personal blog, http://www.withinthewords.com. She believes everyone can enjoy writing within the environment that works for them. She’s the co-author of The Healthy Back Book and The Healthy Knees Book. She also writes poetry most every day and is working on the sixth draft of her memoir about her journey helping her dyslexic daughter.
Memoir is my favorite form and I’m thrilled to be teaching this class again! We’ll read excerpts of memoir together and talk about why this form makes for compelling reading. We’ll do memoir writing exercises in class and students will complete their very own short memoir by the time class ends. We’ll talk about personal style, I’ll ask the students to read memoirs outside of class, and we’ll talk about the hero’s journey and the transformation that happens inside of a memoir (and a life)! Know that memoirs can take the form of poems or cartoons or graphic novels, too.
