Marcia Miller is a longtime homeschooling mom, unschooling advocate, and math enthusiast. She has a background as an elementary and middle school teacher, and a masters degree in reading and language arts. Most recently, she has worked at an outdoor preschool, and now teaches community center classes for homeschool and after school enrichment programs.
Marcia loves playing with mathematical ideas, games, numbers, and patterns. She is a much-loved math resource for homeschoolers throughout the Seattle area. You can read more about her family’s homeschooling adventures on her website:
Join us as we engage in a variety of mathematical investigations, explore new methods and strategies, and gain an appreciation for mathematical thinking and reasoning. We will work on problem-posing and problem-solving, gaining experience with mental computation, estimation, written computation, and meaningful arithmetic problems. We will work alone and in small groups, explore mathematical topics and strategies together, and share what we find with the larger group. When investigating topics, we will begin with what we know and build on that to search for patterns, pose questions, and solve problems.
Required Skills for Students to Be Successful in This Class:
- An interest in numbers, patterns, arithmetic, and thinking about mathematical problems.
- An ability to think about and solve simple arithmetic problems and an interest in expanding upon that knowledge.
- An ability to work with and alongside others, and listen to others as they share various problems and problem-solving ideas and methods.
The ability to write numbers will be helpful for many of the activities presented. Students will be asked to bring paper and pencils to class. While posing and solving problems, we will record numbers or draw pictures to illustrate a problem, and possibly write simple descriptions, if desired.
