class description

Wood, sticks, seed pods and glue can make artwork, but an insect might call it home! Let’s make “Bug Hotels” …creating artful shelters for solitary bees, beetles, and spiders; even supply houses for small birds.

Small wood frames/boxes are filled with arranged pieces of sticks, wood with holes, dried flower heads, seed pods, mosses, wool, yarn…I might suggest that kids and families start collecting some things toward the end of summer if they sign up. I will provide the boxes/frames. We will design and draw them first, so we’ll use all kinds of imagination. Start thinking outside the box!

Another project using wood in a different way… “Eye portraits.” Using rectangular blocks of wood, the kids are invited to do a close-up self-portrait of their eyes or bring in a photo of a relative or friend’s eyes. They will use acrylic paint, pencils, pens, sharpies for creating the images on the blocks of wood.

Required Skills for Students to Be Successful in This Class:

Imagination and cooperation!

Compliance with Family Rights & Responsibilities.

I may ask students to collect some of the interesting pieces that we use to work on our Bug Hotels.
