Nancy Schatz Alton is a freelance writer and editor. For almost two decades, she’s written for many types of publications, websites and clients. Find her current work at http://www.parentmap.com and on her personal blog, http://www.withinthewords.com. She believes everyone can enjoy writing within the environment that works for them. She’s the co-author of The Healthy Back Book and The Healthy Knees Book. She also writes poetry most every day and is working on the sixth draft of her memoir about her journey helping her dyslexic daughter.
Short story writing is the beginning of writing that first novel! Reading other people’s short stories is also the beginning of writing that first novel! In this class, we’ll read and discuss excerpts of short stories and full short stories. We’ll do playful, in-class exercises to help turn our creative brains on. And we’ll complete 1 (or more, depending on the student) short story by the end of the quarter. We’ll edit our pieces together and students will rewrite drafts, too.
