Nancy Schatz Alton is a freelance writer and editor. For almost two decades, she’s written for many types of publications, websites and clients. Find her current work at http://www.parentmap.com and on her personal blog, http://www.withinthewords.com. She believes everyone can enjoy writing within the environment that works for them. She’s the co-author of The Healthy Back Book and The Healthy Knees Book. She also writes poetry most every day and is working on the sixth draft of her memoir about her journey helping her dyslexic daughter.
Writing about ourselves is illuminating and fun, and reading about other people is also illuminating and fun. In this class, we’ll read excerpts of memoirs and autobiographies and discuss these excerpts. We’ll do playful, in-class exercises to help turn our memoir writing brains on. And we’ll work on a few different longer writing exercises (personal essay, autobiography, etc) in this genre that students will work on in class and at home. We’ll edit our pieces together and students will rewrite drafts, too. This is my favorite form of writing (well, OK, I love poetry, too) and I will bring much excitement and joy to this topic. I’ll also share my own memoir writing, too, and give kids information of what I’ve learned while taking classes on this genre myself.
