class description

Join us for a hands-on class focused on math stories and problem solving as we explore a variety of mathematical ideas and solve fun and challenging problems together. We will read math-related children’s books, use a variety of hands-on materials, pose questions, solve problems, and create our own math stories and word problems. We will talk with each other about math problems, share our ideas and stories, and listen to each other to consider various problem solving ideas and methods.

Required Skills for Students to Be Successful in This Class:

  • An interest in numbers, arithmetic, and thinking about mathematical story problems.
  • An ability to think about and solve simple arithmetic problems.
  • An ability to work with and alongside others, and listen to others as they share various problems and problem solving ideas and methods.

The ability to write numbers and a few words of their own will be helpful. An interest in listening to stories is important, however, all books and stories will be read aloud by the instructor. While listening to stories, and posing and solving problems, we will record numbers or draw pictures to illustrate a problem and write simple, related descriptions. If a child is uncomfortable with written numbers or words, this will be a safe place to explore those possibilities, or to rely on the instructor or others to get words and numbers on paper as needed.
